A true mainstay of Downtown Phoenix culture, Tom’s Restaurant and Tavern has been open for business in Copper Square since 1929. Converted from a city morgue into a gin mill, Tom’s was a hit with politicians and the legal community back in the day. Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, still have a table for four reserved from when they dined at Tom’s with former Gov. Jane Hull. Do not leave without trying Tom’s Chili, made from a recipe that dates back to the restaurant’s opening day. Order the chili cheeseburger (a cheeseburger served open-faced with the 1929 chili) to kill two birds with one stone! Limited night and weekend hours.
